My Process
1. Prep & Rough Balance
I start from silence, bringing up the most important elements first. Color-coding, grouping, and creating an 80% balanced mix using just faders and panning—before touching any plugins.
2. Core Tonal Work
Surgical EQ cuts where needed. Compression for control, not hype. The question is always: does this track really need it, or can the group bus handle it?
3. Bus Processing (Where Pro Mixes Come From)
I don’t sauce every track—I sauce the bus. API 2500 for glue, Decapitator for subtle drive, SSL 4K for tone. This is the secret.
Typical bus chain:
- Drum Bus → API 2500 (glue) → Decapitator (subtle drive)
- Guitar Bus → SSL 4K B (slight EQ lift + grit)
- Vocal Bus → LA-2A (smooth) → Decapitator (mix knob ~10–20%)
- Mix Bus → SSL 4K B (tiny push) or Shadow Hills (gentle glue)
4. FX on Sends
Reverb for space (ValhallaVintageVerb), delay for movement (EchoBoy), parallel compression for power. All on sends, never inserts.
5. Build the Mix
Drums + bass first for low-end foundation. Add vocals, layer guitars/synths around them. Carve small EQ holes (2–5k for vocal presence) rather than EQ acrobatics.
6. Translation Checks
I bounce drafts early and listen on AirPods, laptop speakers, and in the car. I only fix issues that repeat across systems.
7. Final Polish
Automation over compression for movement. Whisper-quiet listening for balance, loud listening for harshness. Your mix is printed with proper headroom for mastering.
